Compare The Difference
There is a significant difference between the reconditioning of a steering gear and the complete remanufacturing of a
steering gear.

What is Reconditioning?
Reconditioning involves locating the problem e.g. a leaking pinion seal or power chamber seal, replacing that component
then adjusting the gear to remove any obvious movement or slack in the centre position in the steering gear.

ACDelco Remanufacturing Process
At ACDelco, when we remanufacture racks & pumps we:

Dismantle the gear completely.

Discard the tie rods, boots & all seals.

Remove and discard all teflon seals.

Dismantle & rebalance the pinion and valve assembly.

Check the housing and rack & piston for cracks and discard
when cracks are detected.

Scrap any housing which is found to have wear in the centre
position.

Rebuild each model gear to the specification laid down by the
O.E. manufacturer of that model.

Never straighten a bent component.
Replace all seals, teflons, tie rods and boots with new genuine O.E. components.

Utilise only genuine components in the remanufacturing process.
Replace the pinion with new when the pinion shows excessive wear, pitting or is cracked.
Test each and every gear for such items as leaking, attainment of correct pressure between chambers, returnability,
elimination of light/heavy sensation etc. This testing is comprehensive and each gear must undergo a minimum of five
separate testing stations to attain the standard we require.
